See Sabc.txt for the UK area code list.

Numbers beginning with 02 are designated as 'geographic' numbers, that is, the first part of the number (the dialling code) specifies geographically where the number is located, within a 20-mile radius of its charge group. Historically calls to these numbers were charged at local, regional or national rate but nowadays most Communications Providers charge a flat rate regardless of location, commonly known as 'geographic' rate.

However 02 numbers are known as 'wide area codes' and are designed to cover a wider geographical area than standard 01 codes. Typically 02 codes are used for very large cities or areas where existing 01 number ranges have been exhausted.

02 numbers are 10 digits in length, with a two-digit area code, not including the initial 0 trunk code or +44 country code, usually written as (02x) xxxx xxxx or +44 2x xxxx xxxx. These numbers use the 2+8 format.

Additionally, some subscriber numbers beginning 0x or 1x within every area code are allocated as National Dialling Only numbers.
