ISUP stands for "ISDN User Part". It is a protocol which sits on top of SS7 and is used for tearing up and tearing down calls. ISUP message contain things like ISDN cause code which are passed through the network to indicate call progress/failure.
RFC 3398 has a translation table that translates ISUP cause codes to SIP codes for use with VoIP/TDM gateways.
